Applications of a Computer System for Transformational Grammar
نویسنده
چکیده
Writing a transformational grammar for even a fragment of a natural language is a task of a high order of complexity. Not only must the individual rules of the grammar perform as intended in isolation, but the rules must work correctly together in order to pro~nce the desired results. The details of grammar-writing are likely to be regarded as secondary by the linguist, who is most concerned with what is in the language and how it is generated, and would generally prefer to pay less attention to formal and notational detail. It is thus natural to ask if a computer can be used to assist the linguist in developing a grammar. The model is formal; there are a large number of details to be worked out; the rules interact with one another in ways which may not be foreseen. Most of the errors which occur in writing grammars can be corrected if only they are brought to the attention of the linguist. Those which cannot be so corrected should be of even greater interest to the writer of the grsmmar.

On the Emergence of Scientific Grammar in Iran
Writing the grammar of a language is one of the most significant outputs of linguistic studies. In Iran, it is Avicenna (Ibn-e Sina) who is credited with the first such compilation of the Persian language. Understanding the weaknesses associated with the traditional trends of grammar writing in Iran, contemporary Iranian linguists adopted the modern Western approach following the Chomskyan Turn...

This research explores the effects of three computer-mediated feedback modalities, that is, elicitation, recast, and meta-linguistics, on the learning of English participial, gerund, and infinitival phrases among Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners. The overriding focus of the present study was to investigate whether different types of feedback given through form-focused computer-human exch...
متن کاملMathematical and Computational Models of Transformational Grammar
INTRODUCTION In this paper we compare three models of transformational grammar: the mathematical model of Ginsburg and Partee (1969) as applied by Salomaa (1971), the mathematical model of Peters and Ritchie (1971 and forthcoming), and the computer model of Friedman et al. (1971). All of these are, of course, based on the work of Chomsky as presented in Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965). W...
متن کاملReinventing Radiology in the Digital Age
Digital imaging devices, computer-based image-management systems, and radiology information systems (RIS) are the three building blocks that serve as the foundation for the all-digital practice of radiology (1). In the first instance, these digital technologies have been used simply to replace the analog imaging systems and the manual information and film-handling systems, used historically for...
